Solar Power Inverters: The “Brains” of the Operation

SolarEdge Technologies is leading the industry in PV (Photovoltaic) solar power inverters, alongside their state-of-the-art “smart” monitoring platform.

Over the past 30 years, we’ve watched as many simple electrical devices were reinvented into modern, complex “smart” devices. Solar power inverters are no stranger to this exciting evolution. For example, your television’s first remote control was much bigger with only a few buttons. Today it can control every setting and function of your TV from a smartphone app.

The solar panel inverter in a solar energy system converts DC (direct current) electricity from the solar panels into AC (alternating current) electricity so it can be used to power a home or business. And just like your remote control, they’re getting a lot smarter—thanks to SolarEdge.

All SolarEdge inverters come with safety features that resemble a military front line for your solar energy system, always looking for any possible dangers that could arise. These safety features extend even further when pairing a SolarEdge inverter with SolarEdge power optimizers at each solar panel. In a SolarEdge-equipped solar system, the inverter is in constant communication with the power optimizers, collecting information such as output voltage, current, and even the number of kilowatt-hours each panel produced—all displayed on the monitoring platform.

But what does a “smart” inverter do with all of this information? First, it runs a series of ongoing tests that measures and compares the energy produced to the data it’s receiving. If there are ever problems (like a damaged wire or a broken or disconnected EMT conduit) it would know from these tests and act accordingly to help prevent electrical shock hazards or system failure and damage. Every morning when sunlight hits the solar panels for the first time, the inverter wakes up out of night mode. And before it begins converting DC into AC, the inverter scans the entire system to ensure no safety violations are triggered. And should your system need to turn off, the inverter and optimizers work together to begin rapid shut down.

Now that’s smart.
